The innovative design of the system makes it maintenance and chemical-free.
The core consists of a high purity sacrificial anode surrounded by a brass sheath. The galvanic elements consist of a half-cell of a less noble metal and a half-cell of a more noble metal.
The less noble metal, in this case the sacrificial anode, gives up its electrons, causing ions to detach from the sacrificial anode and pass into the water flow. Electric current flows through the transfer of electrons.
In the AQUABION® limescale converter, the cell voltage is 0.4 to 1 V, depending on the respective water parameters. Various swirl elements made of stainless steel are connected upstream and downstream of the anode.
They create turbulence in the water flow. This keeps the anode free and achieves the largest possible contact surface with the water flow.
The ions dissolved from the anode in the water now cause precipitation of the still liquid limescale in the cold water. This is an innovative method to reduce corrosion and calcification of piping systems and metals.
For example, in shipbuilding, anodes on the outer walls of hulls protect the metal walls, and bar anodes often protect higher-value compounds such as steel or galvanized iron and copper materials from corrosion.

The contact of the water with the sacrificial anode inside and the sheath outside modifies the lime particles contained in the water and significantly reduces their ability to settle in pipes.
The clever design of the system eliminates the need to refill salt tablets or add chemicals and external power.
